Lambrusco: Loud Candy Terps Built for the Pacific Northwest

The Lambrusco strain was bred to combine loud candy terps, strong potency, colorful purple fades, and outdoor performance into one unique cultivar. The growing conditions in the Pacific Northwest near Portland, Oregon at the 45th latitude can be difficult for cannabis cultivation because of the cool temperatures and wet fall weather. Many strains simply do not finish early enough outdoors or they struggle with bud mold once the rains arrive. The goal with Lambrusco was to create a strain with elite modern terp profiles while still maintaining the vigor, structure, and mold resistance needed for outdoor production.

Lambrusco was bred to finish early while producing extremely loud sour candy terps. The plant structure was selected to handle outdoor conditions with strong branching, vigorous growth, and dense but well-stacked buds that allow airflow through the canopy. Many of the phenotypes fade into deep shades of red and purple late in flower which is where the strain gets the name “Lambrusco,” inspired by the rich color of Lambrusco wine.

To better understand the strain, take a look at the Lambrusco lineage:

The Sunset Sherbert clone used in the project came from a friend who was known for tracking down elite clone-only genetics. The original Sunset Sherbert became famous through Sherbinskis in California and helped shape the modern dessert terp movement in cannabis. Sunset Sherbert itself is known for its candy-forward aroma, colorful buds, strong resin production, and relaxing but euphoric effects. When I first grew the clone I immediately understood why it had become so legendary. It flowered early, produced heavy resin, and carried a loud candy terp profile unlike most strains available at the time.

Around the same time the original Gorilla Glue #4 clone was becoming one of the most talked about strains in the country. The strain was created by Joesy Whales and became famous for its extreme potency, heavy resin production, and loud fuel-forward aroma. Gorilla Glue quickly developed a reputation for producing incredibly strong cannabis with sticky resin that would glue trimming scissors together. When I obtained the clone I knew it would add potency and resin production to my breeding projects.

At that point my core breeding stock was Macob Kush, which was my cross of Obama Kush and Micky Kush. I had originally created Macob Kush while searching for hardy outdoor genetics that could finish early in the Pacific Northwest climate while still producing quality flower. Obama Kush was a clone-only strain local to Portland, Oregon that finished early and carried strong medicinal qualities. Micky Kush came from TGA and Homegrown Natural Wonders genetics and brought vigor, branching, and outdoor performance into the project.

I began combining the genetics together searching for a pheno that captured everything I was looking for: loud terps, potency, vigor, early flowering, and mold resistance. Once I pheno hunted the seeds, a few plants immediately stood out. Some of the phenotypes were short and squatty with unbelievably loud candy terps that smelled like sour skittles and sweet gas. The aroma was so loud it would stink through the bag. The potency from the Gorilla Glue side blended perfectly with the candy terps from the Sherbert side and created something truly unique.

I knew immediately that I had found something special worth preserving and improving further. Even though the terp profile and potency were already exceptional, I wanted to improve the plant’s outdoor performance and mold resistance for growers in difficult climates. To accomplish that I crossed the selected Lambrusco phenotype into my Jagerschnitzel bx2 line.

The Jagerschnitzel added stronger branching, improved airflow, faster finishing traits, and better resistance to botrytis without overpowering the sour candy terp profile that made Lambrusco unique in the first place. The result was a balanced hybrid capable of thriving both indoors and outdoors while still producing boutique-quality flower.

Lambrusco is known for its loud sour candy terp profile, colorful purple and red fades, heavy resin production, and potent relaxing effects. It is one of the more unique terp profiles in my breeding collection and remains a standout strain for growers looking for something different than the typical dessert or gas-heavy modern varieties.

Lambrusco performs exceptionally well outdoors in cool climates and is also highly suited for indoor cultivation. Flowering times typically range from 49–63 days indoors while outdoor plants usually finish from the end of September into early October at the 45th latitude.
